ABOUT SkillSetz

BUSINESS

SkillSetz is a B2B Services Marketplace that enables businesses to find, engage, and transact with experienced knowledge specialists on business-related projects.

SkillSetz is made for businesses and understands the needs of both the businesses and the knowledge workers. As a result, SkillSetz automates the contracting, collaboration, and compliance processes so the focus can be on delivering value.

02. PROBLEM

CHALLENGE

Initially, the client came with a request to migrate their existing online store to the newer version of their eCommerce Platform. Why? The business couldn’t implement an omnichannel strategy and therefore achieve constant growth.

The first kick-off meeting uncovered that the migration would not benefit the business because it only impacts a consequence, not a cause.

THE IDEA

In 2018, Matt McCarrick, the founder of SkillSetz, set an ambitious goal – to build a marketplace that helps large corporations improve their visibility around Services spend.
img img img

EXPECTATIONS

This seemed an easy win because Matt was tech-savvy, had first-hand experience, deep knowledge of corporate spending, a significant network, and investment capital that poised the project for success.

IMPLEMENTATION

While initial prototyping went well, SkillSetz found themselves challenged with the lack of internal skills to perform the technical implementation. Matt’s own experience was not enough to bring the project live.
img img img

CHALLENGE

In addition, the early-stage nature of the business was such that time and costs were critical variables. The longer the project took to develop, the less likely early adopters will remain.

Maven became part of the project at the prototype phase. The goal was to finish up the project timely and cost-effectively.
To deliver long-term success, we’ve offered to change the approach and the goal. We’ve started to work on a product instead of a project as the Solution Partner. First, we build up the business essence of the product and then iteratively release the marketplace.

    03. SOLUTION

    THE WELL-EXECUTED
    INCEPTION

The first step for the Maven team was to understand the SkillSetz product vision. It was critical to discover what SkillSetz’s vision for the business looked like while at the same time continuing to work on the prototype.

To address both immediate needs, the Inception phase was broken into two parallel processes.

    Prototype
    development

The Inception phase defined the success of the subsequent phases. It focused the project and helped to avoid unnecessary time and expenditures on development resources.

    DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

During the Inception phase, the Scrum framework was chosen for the rest of the development process. It was a perfect fit for the following reasons:

    01
    PRODUCT
    ORIENTED
Scrum increases time-to-market and makes the delivery continuous throughout the process.
    02
    ADAPTABLE
Creating a completely new product has risks, so adaptability is critical.
    03
    LOWER
    COST
As the development was self-funded the process needed to have maximum efficiency and minimum cost.

    RELEASE STRATEGY

To increase time-to-market in a cost-effective way, we’ve built up the following transition strategy during the Inception phase:
    img
Rather than launch MVP at once, we’ve divided the release into a series of smaller independent releases. Each release immediately generates value and could be used by the customers. Each next adds up the functionality to the previous one.
Each independent release, in turn, goes through the following workflow to obtain the perfect market fit and maximum value. The workflow had the following structure:
    1
    Develop

Develop a minimum functionality of a feature.

    2
    Test Release

Perform a test release to gather feedback and determine changes.
Based on feedback and change requirements, continue the development and provide another test release if needed.

    3
    Final Release

When the functionality of the feature is completed and accepted, perform the final, public release of the feature.
After the public release, repeat the process.

    CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

The Scrum framework was the appropriate choice as it prioritized tasks, boosted efficiency regularly, accelerated value delivery, and improved quality. This was made possible by the well-arranged process of communication and feedback:
    BEFORE BEFORE THE SPRINT img
Every sprint started with a planning session. It divided into 2 parts:

    THE RESULTS

The MVP release occurred in 3 stages. In Oct. 2020, the Profile Editor was released, then in January 2021, product functionality was live, and in March, the MVP was completed with a transaction feature set.

We continue our partnership on the SkillSetz to further improve the marketplace and to develop a white-label version of the tool for enterprises.

img Maven is an extremely valuable resource for me. They provide high-quality software development work, they are efficient and transparent, they are very good at customer service, and they are time-zone friendly. Most importantly, they always deliver a strong ROI.
